MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Minnesota officials are investigating the theft of the tops of about 20,000 trees by thieves who will sell the 4-foot-high tops as miniature Christmas trees.
In a case that the Minneapolis Star Tribune named "The Grinch meets Paul Bunyan," the tops of up to 20,000 black spruce trees were stolen this month from an 18-acre tract of state land 40 miles north of Hibbing.
State forestry officials suspect they will be sold as small Christmas trees nationwide.
Authorities say the tree rustlers probably took more than a week to remove several truckloads of spruce tops. Gone are between 10,000 and 20,000 treetops, valued at up to $80,000.
The Star Tribune said the thieves spared a 50-foot-wide buffer of trees so anyone driving on a nearby highway wouldn't notice anything awry.
If caught, the thieves could face felony theft and trespassing charges.
