SEATTLE, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- People are gobbling up a soft drink flavored with turkey and gravy produced by a Seattle-area beverage maker on the run-up to Thanksgiving.
Jones Soda chief Peter van Stolk claims responsibility for devising the drink, of which 6,000 bottles were offered at 99 cents each as a novelty.
The inventor himself describes the flavor as "gross," the San Francisco Chronicle said.
Yet it sold out from the company's web site in short order, and is now being sold in lots on the Internet eBay auction site for as much as $71 for two bottles.
"The liquid's ominous, murky brown color accurately warns consumers about the taste sensation," the Chronicle said in its review. "With the first sip, hints of sweet caramel and savory lard hit the palate, usually followed by facial expressions connoting confusion, disgust or anger."
Van Stolk said the original plan was to donate the profits from the turkey drink to charities who feed the homeless on Thanksgiving.
