LONDON, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- President George Bush's 3-day visit to England reportedly created a 20 percent jump in muggings and purse-snatchings.
The street crime numbers returned to their previous levels once Bush departed, the London Telegraph said Wednesday.
Scotland Yard says the crime surge is clear evidence that when it takes police from high crime areas, the muggers feel more confident.
Officers expect problems to persist over the coming weeks when officers who worked lengthy shifts in the Bush operation, take off the time they are due.
Last week, street crimes hovered around 150 a day at the start of the week, their current stable level. On Wednesday, there were 184; on Thursday, the worst day, the total was 187. On Friday, when many officers were still on "Bush watch" before Bush left, it was 177.
But on Saturday, Sunday and Monday the numbers fell to 146, 109 and 154, respectively.
