OSLO, Norway, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Norway's vehicle registration authority has banned the prime minister's official new bombproof BMW until it loses 88 lbs.
The London Telegraph said the custom-built BMW 760 iL, which weighs four tons, has been parked in the government's garage since delivery last month.
Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik's information officer, Oivind Ostang, said: "It has to be slimmed down to be registered to carry four people. Currently, it can only be accepted as a three-person vehicle.
"BMW will have to sort it out," he said, adding the company had suggested removing some of the car's armor and he hoped the vehicle would be registered within weeks.
The overweight vehicle can withstand projectiles from any hand weapon, as well as blasts from mines or mortars.
The registration authority declined Monday to give a detailed reason why the vehicle could not be registered, but it was thought strict Norwegian rules on braking lengths were in dispute.
