Cross-country drive on 2 gallons of gas

PARIS, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A planned 20 percent cigarette price hike has sparked what is reportedly the biggest pro-smoking demonstration in French history.
The London Telegraph reported Monday about 5,000 tobacconists and smokers occupied parts of central Paris Sunday in protest of the price hike.
The price of cigarettes has already risen by 47 percent this year and protesters from across France spilled from 200 buses and four trains to vent their anger on the streets of the capital.
The latest rise will make cigarettes in France the third most expensive in Europe, behind Norway and Britain.
The price hikes are part of President Jacques Chirac's need to fill state coffers while cutting taxes and maintaining government spending.
