NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A Boston baseball fan has gone right to the source of the "Curse of the Bambino" to ask for a Red Sox victory, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

Mike Graves made a pilgrimage to Babe Ruth's grave with prayers to the Sultan of Swat, or Bambino, to forgive the Red Sox for trading him to the New York Yankees.

Thousands of fans believe the curse began when Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold the Bambino to the Yankees for $125,000. Since 1918, the Red Sox have never won the World Series while the Yankees have won 26 -- prompting many New Englanders to believe trading Ruth put a hex on the American League franchise.

As a final gesture, Graves, 29, left his Red Sox cap on Ruth's headstone as a talisman against the curse.

Ruth's gravesite was festooned with Yankee memorabilia Tuesday in anticipation of the series, which begins Wednesday night in The Bronx. Offerings to the Babe included U.S. flags, baseball caps and bats, newspaper clippings -- and even a ballpark frank with sauerkraut.
