Named for the drinking age in the United States, RU-21 is being sold as a natural remedy although it was developed by the Soviets after World War II. Advertisement Its makers claim it stops the body making an enzyme that turns alcohol into acetaldehyde, a toxic chemical that can damage tissues, the London Guardian reported. The pill lets a person get drunk but indefinitely delays the hangover and damage to the body's organs. The secrets of the pill were declassified in 1999 and it was developed into a market commodity. Its makers and California marketers say it is selling to the tune of $10,000 a week. "Russians can outdrink anybody in the world anyway," said Emil Chiaberi, head of Spirit Sciences, which sells the pill in the United States. "I don't know why they needed a pill."
