NEW DELHI, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A judge in southern India has ordered a politician to read the teachings of the country's late pacifist independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi.

The BBC said A Ranganathan, a senior opposition member from the city of Madras, was in court to face charges of intimidating behavior.

The judge in the case granted him bail - but ordered him to spend five days in the Mahatma Gandhi Museum in the city of Madurai. Last week, the court ordered Ranganathan to buy Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography, My Experiment with the Truth, so he could reform himself and serve his constituents more effectively.

He was accused of threatening another person in a land dispute.

The BBC said the court also ordered him to produce proof he has been reading Mahatma Gandhi's book, and to sign the visitor's register in the Gandhi museum every day until Sept. 27.
