Twins' sex trial could be double dilemma

MIAMI, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in Florida are grappling with a case involving identical twins charged with sexual assault, a report said Friday.

Aaron and Gonzalo Chavez, both 17, were picked up by police Wednesday night after a month-long investigation that began when the 11-year-old victim told her mother of the alleged assaults, the Miami Herald said. The two suspects allegedly visited the girl separately and both have been charged.

Prosecutors contend the boys' uncanny resemblance will not matter, as they have self-incriminating statements from both on tape. But the defense attorneys could try to confuse jurors about which twin did what.

Identical twins have the same DNA and, obviously, it can be difficult for a potential eyewitness or victim to tell them apart.

Friends say the two are mirror images of each other. Even their priest can't tell them apart.

"They like to fool people and make them guess who they really are," said their younger sister, Yamel. "Their teachers didn't know which one was Gonzalo and which one was Aaron."
