NEW YORK, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- City officials are getting ready to authorize the purchase of pay toilets to be placed around the Big Apple.

But when it comes to pay toilets, New Yorkers want more for their money.

The New York Times staked out a "test toilet" and asked residents what they expect for 50 cents.

What the Times found first on the list was no big surprise: "No ugly odors." Consumers also requested fewer instructions and easier-to-find toilet paper. The test unit had a built-in dispenser which hid the roll from sight.

Other suggestions included fresh flowers or colorful posters.

Reaction was mixed to one of the test toilets' features: The door is programmed to slide open after 15 minutes with no exceptions. A digital display keeps count of minutes left and a recording warns, "Your time to use the toilet has expired. The door will open in one minute."
