Book is right but not cover picture

AMES, Iowa, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The two books published by Iowa State Press showcase Pulitzer Prize-winning stories but their cover pictures are unlikely to win the coveted prize.

The Des Moines Register reported Friday the man in the cover photograph of the books is Joseph Conrad, a 20th-century Polish-born author, and not Joseph Pulitzer, the creator of American journalism's top award.

Conrad apparently bore a striking resemblance to Pulitzer.

A designer for the Iowa State Press searched a commercial Web site for a Pulitzer photograph for the books. The site turned up photographs of Conrad instead, officials said.

The worker "had no idea who Joseph Conrad was," said Paul Becker, publishing director for Iowa State Press, a private Ames publishing company.

Supervisors also failed to catch the error. But an alert Philadelphia newspaper reporter did.

The publishing company will distribute a corrected version of the book. Becker said reprint costs will be minimal.
