BOSTON, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A former Teamsters official has convinced a Boston federal judge to delay his sentencing on an extortion conviction so he can get a divorce and remarry.

George Cashman's attorneys rushed into Boston's U.S. District Court last week after federal prosecutors requested the former Teamsters Local 25 leader go immediately to prison.

The Boston Herald said Judge Douglas Woodlock agreed to postpone Cashman's sentencing to Oct. 17, giving him more time to get ready before serving a possible three-year prison term.

The newspaper said Cashman's wife is in the midst of divorcing him and he plans to marry his longtime girlfriend before going to prison. He also wants to attend his daughter's upcoming wedding.

Prosecutors unsuccessfully argued those reasons weren't enough to delay sentencing for his conviction for extorting Cardinal Health of $100,000.
