AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- An inmate who claims an Akron, Ohio, police sergeant wooed her with a marriage proposal, then balked, is suing him.

Linda Karlen's request for damages includes $2.5 million she seeks from Sgt. Sean Matheny, which she calculated from 25 years of expected marriage. She also names the Police Department and the city in her lawsuit, the Cleveland Plain Dealer said Friday.

The woman claims Matheny wooed her with money and gifts, but said her hopes were dashed when she learned he was married and would not be able to secure her release from prison.

Matheny recently returned to work after a 60-day suspension without pay for getting too personal with Karlen.

He denies her allegations, said his lawyer, Thomas Adgate.

Matheny, 47, allegedly sent letters, cards, clothing, food and cash to Karlen, 50, at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.

Karlen, 50, was convicted in 1990 and sentenced to seven to 15 years for conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
