, Japan, July 18 (UPI) -- A Japanese bank that handed over a man's life savings to a thief must repay most of it, a court has ruled.

The unidentified victim's bankbook, and other identification was stolen from his home in February 2002, Mainichi Daily News reported Friday. The person who stole the items went to the bank and withdrew the money soon afterwards.

"If bank officials had checked the identity of the person with an identification number, there is a high possibility they would have found out that it was not the real person," the court said.
