WASHINGTON, July 11 (UPI) -- A newly discovered diary of President Harry S. Truman reveals feelings he had for Jews that didn't show publicly.

A research aide at the Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Mo., found the diary by accident earlier this year. It was unveiled at the National Archives Thursday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The most surprising comments were Truman's remarks on Jews, written July 21, 1947, in which he said

"The Jews, I find, are very, very selfish. They care not how many Estonians, Latvians, Finns, Poles, Yugoslavs or Greeks get murdered or mistreated as displaced persons as long as the Jews get special treatment."

Those comments startled scholars because Truman is known as a president who acted to help Jews in postwar Europe and who supported recognition of Israel in 1948 despite opposition from the State Department.
