Man risks life in fire for 62 pets

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, July 8 (UPI) -- A Winnipeg man is recovering from second degree burns Tuesday after rescuing 62 pets from a kennel fire.

Fire officials were trying to determine the cause of the fire that swept through the Santana Kennels Monday. Owner Ian McIver arrived at work in time to see the structure ablaze, and immediately set out to free 51 dogs and 11 cats.

McIver, who suffered second-degree burns to his head, hands and arms, was aided in the rescue by several people, including some passersby.

Seven people, including a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, suffered minor dog bites during the rescue.

McIver sustained second degree burns to his hands, arms, face and chest but checked himself out of the hospital immediately to return to the kennel.

No animals died but one Pomeranian was singed.

Damage is estimated at at least $1 million.
