The 2,000-year-old rice wine in a large bronze jar shaped like a phoenix head, was discovered in a tomb in the city of Xi'an, The Scotsman reported Sunday. The jar contained over a gallon of the bluish wine, which was a valuable find for researchers studying ancient distilling methods. In addition to being the oldest, it is the largest quantity of ancient wine ever discovered, the Scotsman said. A spokesman for Christie's international wine department told the newspaper it was a "fantastic find." "I have no idea what it could fetch at sale -- if the analysis shows that it is a wine it could well break the world record," he said.
