Fifty-seven percent of Americans are very satisfied with their lives, compared to an average of 21 percent in Europe.

Sixty-three percent of Americans expect their personal situation will improve in the next five years compared to 40 percent of Europeans.

A cross section of more than 1,000 Americans and 1,000 Europeans were surveyed.

MEN DO ASK FOR DIRECTIONS, ABROAD

According to a survey for TravelWords American men are more likely to ask for directions when traveling abroad.

The TravelWords Speak the Language study polled 1,062 Americans online to determine the most important phrase to know when visiting a non-English speaking country.

Some 34 percent of American men felt knowing how to get directions is the most important bit of local lingo to master.

For women, the foreign phrase they most wish they had on the tip of their tongue was simply "I need help" as opposed to "How much does that cost?" and "Where is the bathroom?"

TravelWords is a company that helps travelers learn foreign language phrases to get by.
