THINGS WE DON'T UNDERSTAND
Mentor, Ohio, school officials say there will be two presidents of next year's senior class at Mentor High.
NewsChannel 5 in Cleveland reports the decision came after a ballot-box stuffing incident that resulted in the election of Ollie Thomas, the school's first black senior class president.
The problem was there were more ballots to count than voters to cast them so the five candidates running for president decided Thomas should share the presidency with Bob Kinner, the runner-up.
Thomas and Kinner told NewChannel 5 they are happy with the outcome and agree two heads are better than one.
TODAY'S SIGN THE WORLD IS ENDING
At Maney Hill Primary school in Britain parents are not allowed to attend "sports day" because they might embarrass their children, the British Broadcasting Corp. reports.
Head teacher Judith Wressel wants the day to be less competitive and told the BBC keeping moms and dads out would be in their children's best interest.
Parent Rob Busst told the BBC it was "political correctness gone mad."
Busst says kids aren't "scarred for life because they lose the egg and spoon race."
NEWS OF OTHER LIFE FORMS
They're called Cravers -- those who love and long for a White Castle burger. The company has a special Hall of Fame to honor its most loyal and dedicated fans and this year's inductees are true Cravers.
Karen Wohlstrom of Apple Valley, Minn., is among a group of volunteers at the Minnesota Zoo who celebrate every Mother's Day by sharing White Castle hamburgers.
The Rev. John Stravropoulos of Canton, Ohio, would travel with up to 200 parishioners to the nearest White Castle on Easter to break the 40-days meat abstention.
Sandy Hart of Wickliffe, Ky., brought the idea of "crave" to a whole new meaning, and her husband, Ray, redefined dedication. Ray did not let a cold winter night or a broken down car stop him from his quest to bring White Castle hamburgers to an 8 1/2 months pregnant Sandy.
AND FINALLY, TODAY'S UPLIFTING STORY
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington says Lily Tomlin will receive the sixth annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Tomlin will be honored at a gala on Oct. 26 at the Kennedy Center, to be taped for broadcast over PBS.
The center said in a statement Tomlin has made us think, not just laugh, in keeping with the social commentary and satire for which Samuel Clemens -- Mark Twain -- is so well known.
"She has created characters familiar to all of us, from the irascible Ernestine and irrepressible Edith Ann to Trudy, the wise street person and Agnus Angst, the aggressive but sensitive teenager," the Center said. "Her comedy is meaningful because, like Twain's, it expresses truths we already recognize unconsciously, and she allows us to embrace our frailties without shame or embarrassment."
