Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is April 23.

Clarinetist and bandleader Jimmie Noone was born this day in New Orleans in 1895. He was one of the most significant New Orleans reed players and became a vital link between the older Crescent City style of playing and the Chicago swing style.

Trumpeter-composer Benny Harris was born this day in New York in 1919. He was a vital contributor to the bebop repertoire. Harris combined the chord changes of "How High The Moon" with Charlie Parker's solo on "Jumpin' Blues" to create the classic Parker-inspired tune called "Ornithology."

Drummer Bobby Rosengarden was born this day in Elgin, Ill., in 1924. As a New York studio musician, he worked with Duke Ellington, Mile Davis, Benny Goodman and the Gil Evans orchestra before signing on with the World's Greatest Jazz Band and Soprano Summit.

On this day in 1943, the Earl Hines Band, with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughan in its ranks, opened at New York's Apollo Theater.

On the recording front...

Telarc and 3 Deuces Records have released "The Ozell Tapes: The Official Bootleg," a two-CD live recording compiled from bassist Marcus Miller's 2002 octet tour. As Miller explains, the project was compiled from concert soundboard tapes without remixes or overdubs. In his words, "There's always somebody sneaking recording equipment into our shows and releasing unauthorized CDs. This time, I decided to beat the pirates to the punch."

Telarc is also out today with singer-guitarist John Pizzarelli's "Live at Birdland," a two-CD package celebrating his trio's 10th anniversary, and pianist Hiromi Uehara's label debut "Another Mind." Hiromi graduates next month from the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Basin Street Records is out this week with "Evolution Revolution" by the Headhunters featuring Bill Summers, Mike Clark and Paul Jackson. Their special guests on this project, some 30 years after their "Head Hunters" album debut, are Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton, Bennie Maupin, Jack Walrath and Harvey Mason.

Bassist Gerald Veasley's newest CD is "Velvet" on the Heads Up label. It's his sixth CD for Cleveland-based Heads Up. Guest artists include singers Jaguar Wright, John Stephens, Mikki Kornegay and Warren Cooper, guitarist Randy Bowland, and organists Benji Porecki and Michael Aharon.

West Coast singer Michelle Conte has made her recording debut on Jen Bay Records, the label run by her brother, guitarist Mark Elf. She's a crisp and confident singer, riding a wonderful cushion provided by Elf, pianist Allen Farnham, bassist Neal Minor, saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and drummer Jon Wikan. They explore a wide array of standards on Conte's "Lucky Me!".
