Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is April 19.


Drummer Tommy Benford was born this day in 1905 in Charleston, W.Va. Benford first made his mark with Elmer Snowden and Jelly Roll Morton in the 1920s, and contributed mightily to Morton's classic 1928 recordings "Kansas City Stomps" and "Shreveport."


On this day in 1960, Sarah Vaughan recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra for the Roulette label.

The Chucho Valdes quartet is at California State University's Carpenter Center in Long Beach. Saxophonist Ricky Woodard is at Charlie O's in Valley Glen with the John Heard trio tonight. The Johnny Blas Latin jazz band is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight. The Jack Sheldon quartet is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks. Bob DeSena's Latin jazz group is at The Deck in Palm Springs tonight.

The SFJazz spring season features a Jazz Giants concert at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre tonight with Ray Bryant and Randy Weston's African Rhythms duo featuring John Handy. Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa is at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco with his new multi-media collaboration with London-based VJs Marc Silver and Nick Hillel, and Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles. Trumpeter Mark Wright's sextet is at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco tonight. The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine is at Yoshi's in Oakland through Sunday.


Singer Steve Tyrell is at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle through Sunday.


On the recording front...


The Satoko Fujii quartet has released its second CD, a fusion of free jazz and avant-garde rock called "Minerva." It's on the Libra label. Pianist Fujii's band includes Tatsuya Yoshida, the drummer/mastermind of the avant-rock duo The Ruins, Fujii's husband, the trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, and bassist Takeharu Hayakawa.
