STEELY DAN TO DO NEW CONCERT TOUR

Mega-group Steely Dan has announced its first major concert series in three years. The group's promoters say the tour will begin in late July in Costa Mesa, Calif., a far-flung Orange County suburb of Los Angeles. More than two dozen dates have been announced so far, from the West Coast to the Midwest to Atlantic City. The last time Steely Dan toured was during the summer of 2000. This tour will help hype Dan's latest CD, "Everything Must Go." That album will be released nearly a month earlier than originally planned. It could hit store shelves as early as May 6. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker will be backed up by a small group added for the concert series.

TOBY KEITH BUSIEST MAN IN NASHVILLE

As if hosting the CMT Flameworthy show and performing two songs during the broadcast weren't enough, Toby Keith also won three major awards. The singer whose controversial pro-America song was the subject of big debate last year won Male Video of the Year, Cocky Video and Overall Video trophies. The event, sponsored each year by the Country Music Television network, relies on fan voting to decide the winners. Second-generation star Hank Williams Jr. summed up the night by noting the recent resurgence in the popularity of the genre. "Country music is going on and on ... and ain't nothing gonna stop country music, baby," he told the audience. Actress Pamela Anderson co-hosted with Keith.

CLINTONS LATE ON BOOK DEALS

Both Bill and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., are apparently running behind in finishing books for which they have signed lucrative publishing deals. Gossip reporter Richard Johnson says Simon & Schuster is "furious" because Mrs. Clinton has not turned in the long-promised manuscript for her book. She reportedly received nearly $3 million in a cash advance when she signed with the venerable publisher. The company had planned to have the edited text ready for printing this spring. Meanwhile, the former president was paid $12 million in advance for his book. Knopf, the publisher, says there is not even a title for it yet, let alone a completed text.

ROSIE BLASTS TABLOID STORY

Comedienne Rosie O'Donnell has responded to a National Enquirer story about the "impending breakup of her relationship" by demanding a retraction. Published reports show O'Donnell, who has been with companion Kelli Carpenter for years, is asking the tabloid to take back what it printed in its latest edition. At that time the Enquirer said O'Donnell and Carpenter had been in a series of bitter fights. It further charged at one point Carpenter had walked out with their 4-month-old daughter. O'Donnell's lawyer was quoted as saying the entire story was "a pack of lies." There are indications that even if a retraction is printed, O'Donnell might take the tabloid to court.

IS 'ROCKY' HEADED FOR BROADWAY?

If Sylvester Stallone has his way, "Rocky" might become a Broadway musical. The New York Post says Stallone -- who became an international superstar for his multi-movie portrayal of the struggling "Cinderella story" boxer Rocky Balboa -- has enlisted the help of Thomas Mechan. He's the writer who put together the book versions of "The Producers" and "Hairspray." This past weekend Stallone and his wife went to see "Hairspray" and were reportedly "mobbed" by fans. The appearance also generated an instant demand for disposable cameras, with many rushing to a nearby store to get them to take pictures of Rocky in person.

RESULTS OF QUESTION NO. 557 (SPORTS)

Last week we asked: "Do you have any sports mementos or memorabilia displayed in your home, office or apartment?" Our usual random dip into the e-mail inbox gathered the following: Not as many people have sports stuff in their homes as have movie mementos. Allison says she loved the late Dale Earnhardt and has a small wall in the utility room dedicated to him. JimM, a former Florida high school basketball coach, rues the fact his mom threw out all his old baseball cards. "Many were 'rookie' cards," he reports. "They would be worth tons today." ConnieBrew says with all the cable channels carrying soccer she now has some European league posters on the wall. Finally, CraigO says he's a consummate hockey nut, a former high school goalie. "My tribute to hockey is having it on my TV monitors all the time." TOMORROW: More of your thoughts. GBA
