Today is April 3.

Trumpeter James "Bubber" Miley was born this day in 1903 in Aiken, S.C. His "growling" style of playing the trumpet attracted the interest of Duke Ellington, who made him a central figure in his first band.

While Miley only stayed with Ellington for a few years, he had a profound impact on all of Ellington's subsequent music. As the Duke himself once explained, "When Bubber came in, that's when we forgot all about the sweet music."

Bass player and arranger Pierre Michelot was born this day in 1928 in Saint Denis, France. Michelot has worked regularly since the 1940s with American jazz musicians touring Europe, and was a featured musician in the 1985 film "Round Midnight."

Bass player Scott LaFaro was born this day in 1936 in Newark, N.J. He had a brief yet indelible impact on jazz, particularly during his two years with the Bill Evans trio from 1959 to 1961.

LaFaro developed a soloing technique that expanded the role of the bass in piano-led trios, and also developed new types of rhythm playing on the big double bass. He died in a car crash in July 1961 at age 25. LaFaro's last gig was a Newport Jazz Festival appearance the previous weekend with Stan Getz.
