Swing band leader and singer Ina Ray Hutton was born this day in 1916 in Chicago. She died in 1984.

Pianist Dick Katz was born this day in 1924. He was a longtime collaborator with Lee Konitz and Roy Eldridge, and a record producer, before becoming a free-lance pianist.

Drummer Roy Haynes was born this day in 1925 in Boston. He spent two years in Charlie Parker's bop quintet in 1949 and 1950 before becoming singer Sarah Vaughan's regular drummer. He remains a busy and influential player and bandleader.

Trumpeter Blue Mitchell was born this day in 1930 in Miami. He originally was a rhythm-and-blues player who built his jazz identity in the company of Horace Silver and Chick Corea. Mitchell died of cancer in 1972.

Trumpeter Terence Blanchard was born this day in 1962 in New Orleans. He came to prominence in the 1980s as a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and then as co-leader of a quintet with alto saxophonist Donald Harrison.

On this day in 1954, pianist Al Haig recorded "Jazz Will O' The Wisp" for the Esoteric label. It was a trio session with bassist Bill Crow and drummer Lee Abrams. Haig was a master of harmonics, but never got the attention he deserved as a player.

On the recording front...

Joe Wilder is just out with his latest CD, "Among Friends," on the Evening Star label. When recorded last August and September in New York, it was a continuation of the lengthy celebration of the trumpeter's 80th birthday on Feb. 22, 2002. His multi-generational guest artists included Bucky Pizzarelli, Bill Charlap, Russell Malone, Frank Wess, Chris Neville, Chuck Redd and Warren Vache -- plus a few more surprises.

Wilder and a guitarist started working on a duo version of the final track, when in walked bassist Jerry Bruno and drummer Joe Cocuzzo, who were at the studio awaiting another session. Along with pianist Skitch Henderson, who was just visiting, they turned the moment into an impromptu quintet jam as Pizzarelli spotted Henderson and called out, "You be Basie."
