LOS ANGELES, March 10 (UPI) -- Composer Burt Bacharach was discharged from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles Monday after surgery last week for complications following a dental abscess.

A publicist for the 74-year-old Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer said Bacharach is recuperating at his home. The date of surgery was not disclosed for reasons of "family privacy," but it is known that Bacharach was admitted to the hospital more than one week ago.

Bacharach is a three-time Academy Award winner, a six-time Grammy winner and the recipient of the Record Academy Trustees Award. He is also a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

He and his long-time collaborator Hal David won the Oscar for best song for "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," and Bacharach won the Oscar for best music score, for the 1969 hit "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Bacharach won his third Oscar for "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," from the 1981 comedy "Arthur" -- a song he co-wrote with Peter Allen, Christopher Cross and Carole Bayer Sager.

He was married to Sager from 1982-90.

Bacharach and Don Was shared the duties as musical directors for the 72nd Academy Awards in 2000.

With 47 Top 10 hits and nine No. 1 songs to his credit, Bacharach has been covered by such legendary recording artists as the Beatles, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall, Barbra Streisand and Dionne Warwick.

His composition with Sager, "That's What Friends Are For," has become a global anthem that has helped raise more than $1.5 million for AIDS research.
