Tenor saxophonist Herschel Evans was born this day in 1909 in Denton, Texas. During three years with the Basie Band, from 1936 to 1939, he was paired with Lester Young in what started the band's battling tenor solos.

Tenor saxophonist Herschel Evans was born this day in 1909 in Denton, Texas. During three years with the Basie Band, from 1936 to 1939, he was paired with Lester Young in what started the band's battling tenor solos.

In New York... pianist Ahmad Jamal's trio is at Iridium tonight. The Blue Note features the Latin side of Paquito d'Rivera. The Kurt Rosenwinkel quartet is at the Village Vanguard. Singer Jeffrey Smith's group is at The Jazz Standard. One World, featuring Dave Stryker, Gene Jackson, Badal Roy, Milton Cardona and Andy McKee, is at Sweet Rhythm tonight.

The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music features saxophonist Benny Golson tonight. Peter Leitch and Sean Smith are at Walker's in Greenwich Village. Diane Hubka is at N.Y.C., formerly the Greenwich Cafe, tonight.

Symphony Space presents Afro-Puerto Rican Music and Dance: Tradition and Beyond featuring the William Cepeda Company, with more than 20 musicians and dancers. Trombonist Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke on Sunday nights.


Violinist Susie Hansen is the featured artist with the William Patterson University Latin Jazz Big Band this afternoon at the Shea Performing Arts Center in Wayne, N.J.


In the Boston area... the Milton Academy Jazz Band is at The Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass., this afternoon.


In Philadelphia... Elio Villafranca holds a CD release party for his new one: "Incantations Encantaciones" tonight at North by Northwest.


In Chicago... the Pat Martino quartet is at the Jazz Showcase tonight. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles this afternoon. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium tonight. Kimberly Gordan's trio is at the Green Mill. The Tim Green and Tim McNamara trio is at Katerina's this noon.

Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park tonight. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne. Carmen Stokes is at the Backroom tonight and Monday. The Chicago Jazz Orchestra with Frieda Lee is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn tonight. The Typhani Monique duo is at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston tonight.


In New Orleans tonight... Earl Brown is at Cafe Sbisa. The Hot Club of New Orleans is at the Circle Bar. Shannon Powell's quartet is at Donna's. Rob Wagner's New Thing is at the Dragon's Den. Big Sam's Funky Nation and the Just-Off-the-Boat Refugee Jazz Band are at the Funky Butt. Lucien Barbarin is at the Palm Court. The Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. The James Markway quartet is at Snug Harbor.


In California... The Masters of Groove, featuring Grant Green Jr., Ruben Wilson and Clyde Stubblefield, are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The Sunday Jazz Band features saxophonist Randy Neumann is at Charlie O's in Valley Glen tonight. Jackie Ryan is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks with the Jon Mayer trio. The Golden Eagle Dixieland jazz band is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton. Bireli Lagrene is at Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland tonight.


Billy Cobham's Art of 5 is at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle tonight.
