Art Directors choose 'Catch Me,' 'Towers'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- "Catch Me if You Can" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" were big winners at the Seventh Annual Art Directors Guild awards.

"Catch Me if You Can" -- Steven Spielberg's account of real-life conman Frank Abagnale -- won for best design among contemporary films. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" -- the second of writer-director Peter Jackson's screen adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic literary trilogy -- won for best period-fantasy design.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" is nominated for the Oscar for best art direction, but "Catch Me if You Can" is not.

The other nominees for the Art Directors Guild Contemporary Films category were "The Bourne Identity," "Catch Me If You Can," "The Hours," "One Hour Photo" and "Panic Room." "The Hours" is the only one in the group that is also up for the art direction Oscar.

The other nominees in the Period-Fantasy category are "Chicago," "Gangs of New York," "Minority Report" and "Road to Perdition." "Chicago," "Gangs of New York" and "Road to Perdition" are also up for the art direction Oscar, along with "Frida."

The Art Directors Guild also presented awards in four categories for outstanding production design on TV.

"Alias" won for Single Camera Television Series. "Titus" won for Multi-Camera Television Series.

"Live From Baghdad" won for best design for a Television Movie or Mini-Series, and "Opening Ceremony Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games" won for best Variety or Awards Show, Music Special, or Documentary design.

The guild honored Albert Brenner with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Brenner served as production designer or art director on 57 films through four decades -- including "Backdraft" (1991), "Pretty Woman" (1990), "The Turning Point" (1977) and "Bullitt" (1968). He received five Oscar nominations along the way.
