Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Pianist and composer Tadd Dameron was born this day in 1917 in Cleveland. Under-acknowledged during his career, he is considered today to have been one of the first great jazz arrangers. He had a profound influence on composers Horace Silver, Benny Golson and others. Dameron died in 1965.

Cornet player Warren Vache Jr. was born this day in 1951 in Rahway, N.J. He's one of the premiere swing cornet players today, has toured with the Newport Jazz Festival All-Stars, and was a favorite sideman of singer Rosemary Clooney.

The Jazz Standard's "Winter Blues Week" series features Lucky Peterson tonight through Sunday. Pianists Eric Reed and Mulgrew and guest artists perform the music of Donald Brown tonight at Columbia University's Miller Theater. The Michael Musillami-Mario Pavone quintet and George Schuller and The Schulldogs are at the Knitting Factory tonight.


On the Massachusetts jazz scene... the Ron Carter quartet is at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight through Saturday. Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba is at Scullers in Boston tonight and Saturday with special guest David Sanchez. Drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts is at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton tonight.


In Philadelphia... the Eric Wortham trio is at the Sedgwick Cultural Center tonight. Singer Janet Barron's trio is at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Cafe Degas tonight. The Will Brock quartet is at Zanzibar Blue tonight. The Grant Stewart-John Swana quintet with Ryan Kisor is at Chris's Jazz Cafe.


The Historic Strasburg Inn features John Brubaker, the Bob Ferguson quartet, CoCo amd Company and the David Maxwell band tonight. The Strasburg Jazz Festival continues through Sunday in Lancaster County, Pa.
