Art directors to honor best of 2002

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The Art Directors Guild will hand out awards in Beverly Hills on Saturday honoring the top designs in six categories of movie and TV production.

Of the 10 movies nominated in two feature film categories -- Contemporary and Period-Fantasy -- four are also up for the Best Picture Oscar.

The nominees for the Contemporary Films category are "The Bourne Identity"; "Catch Me If You Can"; "The Hours"; "One Hour Photo" and "Panic Room." "The Hours" is up for the top Oscar.

In the Period-Fantasy category, the nominees are "Chicago"; "Gangs of New York"; "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"; "Minority Report" and "Road to Perdition." "Chicago," "Gangs of New York" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" are also nominated for the top Oscar.

The Art Directors Guild will also present awards in four categories for outstanding production design on TV.

The nominees for Single Camera Television Series are "Alias"; "American Dreams"; "Crossing Jordan"; "Push, Nevada" and "The Shield." The nominees for Multi-Camera Television Series are "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter"; "Bram and Alice"; "Friends"; "Life with Bonnie" and "Titus."

"Live From Baghdad," "Martin and Lewis," "Master Spy," "Path to War" and "Take" are up for the ADG award for best design for a Television Movie or Mini-Series. The nominees for best Variety or Awards Show, Music Special, or Documentary design are "The 44th Annual Grammy Awards," "The 74th Annual Academy Awards," "Cedric the Entertainer Presents," MADtv" and "The Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremonies."

The guild will also honor Albert Brenner with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Brenner served as production designer or art director on 57 films through four decades -- including "Backdraft" (1991), "Pretty Woman" (1990), "The Turning Point" (1977) and "Bullitt" (1968). He received five Oscar nominations along the way.

The seventh annual Excellence in Production Design Awards will be presented Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
