This was a historic night in New York City in 1938. Jazz had no linkage to formal concert settings until Benny Goodman's orchestra played a concert in Carnegie Hall. It was considered the first formal jazz concert and it was recorded.
For that legendary performance, the King of Swing augmented his own band with members of the Count Basie and Duke Ellington orchestras. The concert featured big band and small-combo classics from the Goodman repertoire.
Singer Ivie Anderson was born this date in 1904 in Gilroy, Calif. She joined the Duke Ellington band on the night of Feb. 13, 1931, at the Paramount Theater in New York. The band broke every Paramount attendance record that night, so Ellington considered Anderson the band's good luck charm. She left the Ellington band in 1942 to open a restaurant in Los Angeles. She died in 1949.
Bass player Sandy Block was born this day in 1917 in Cleveland. He worked in the Alvino Rey, Tommy Dorsey and Jerry Wald big bands and recorded with Charlie Shavers, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.
Tenor saxophonist Spike Robinson was born this day in 1930 in Kenosha, Wis.
