PETE TOWNSHEND ARRESTED IN PORN CASE
Police have arrested Pete Townshend on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children after searching the British rocker's home and office Monday.
Despite being held at a southwest London police station, Townshend has not been charged with any crime. Under British law, suspects are not charged immediately upon arrest.
The 57-year-old Who guitarist released a statement over the weekend admitting he has paid to view child pornography on the Internet, but insisting he only did so while researching child abuse for his upcoming book.
Townshend stepped forward after British newspapers reported last week police were investigating an unidentified rocker as part of their wide-reaching child pornography probe.
Adopting an "I-don't-have-anything-to-hide" defense, Townshend even told Britain's Sun newspaper he invited police to search his computer, so they could see precisely how and why he viewed the inappropriate sites. Officers from the Child Protection Command apparently took Townshend up on his offer Monday afternoon as they were seen carrying a box with envelopes, plastic bags and Polaroid film out of Townshend's house. Police say they also confiscated the rocker's computer and intend to examine it.
"It is important they are able to convince themselves that, if I did anything illegal, I did it purely for research. I am not a pedophile," Townshend is quoted as saying. "I have looked at child porn sites maybe three or four times in all, the front pages and previews..."
KIDMAN GETS STAR ON WALK OF FAME
Golden Globe winner Nicole Kidman was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Monday.
The star of "The Hours" and "Moulin Rouge" is the 2,211th entertainer to have his or her name immortalized on the pavement beside California's Kodak Theater.
"Thank you everyone for showing up. I didn't think anybody would come," the 35-year-old actress told the crowd of fans and industry people gathered for the unveiling. "This is sort of amazing to be standing here and to be part of a Hollywood tradition that has been around for so long and will be around for so much longer. This is the icing on the cake."
BUNDYS TO HOST FAMILY REUNION
The Bundys, one of TV's most beloved dysfunctional families, are reuniting for a "Married... with Children" special next month.
The edgy sit-com, which chronicled the adventures of hapless shoe salesman Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill,) his scheming wife, Peg (Katey Sagal,) trampy daughter, Kelly (Christina Applegate) and nerdy son, Bud (David Faustino,) was the Fox network's first hit series and ran from 1987 to 1997.
The Hollywood Reporter says the show's entire cast will re-team for a one-hour reunion special Feb. 16, the night "The Simpsons" marks its 300th episode on Fox.
The Bundy family reunion will coincide with the Feb. 4 release of one of two "Married ... with Children: The Most Outrageous Episodes" DVDs by Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, the trade paper reported. Five episodes will be featured on each DVD, including a never-seen-on-TV original uncut version of the infamous "Lost Episode," which will be part of the first volume.
HANKS REVEALS PASSION FOR TYPEWRITERS
If you have an old typewriter in your attic or garage, Tom Hanks may want to talk to you.
The Oscar-winning actor told United Press International he loves the old machines so much he has collected more than 60 of them -- all in working condition.
"I have a computer, as well, but it's not nearly as much fun," explained the "Catch Me if You Can" star. "I think they're marvelous machines. I think they are amazing. Literally, it's a self-contained deal. You can take it anywhere in the world and there's a huge satisfaction that I get from pounding out thoughts, as opposed to clicking them out. I write on them all the time and I rotate them, so that they all get some sort of use."
Right now, the gem of Hanks' collection is a silver-plated 25th anniversary Smith Carona typewriter, which he keeps in a safe-deposit box and takes out only on special occasions. Although he generally turns his nose up at electric typewriters, the actor admitted there was a blue, personal-sized IBM Selectric on the set of "Catch Me" that he just had to have.
"It's in my office right now," he confided. "It's a beautiful typewriter."
Hanks currently is looking for a Hermes 2000, Hermes Baby or Voss portable typewriter to add to his ever-growing collection.
"I'd love to have it," he said, confessing he can only type about eight words a minute. "So, if you guys could help me..."
