Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Pianist and bandleader Jay McShann, a strong exponent of the Kansas City blues, was born this day in 1909 in Muskogee, Okla. He gave young saxophonist Charlie Parker his first break.

Trombonist Trummy Young was born this date in 1912 in Savannah, Ga. His musical talents matured during a six-year stint in the Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra from 1937 to 1943. Trummy Young doubled as one of the band's singers. He died in 1984.


Drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson was born this day in 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas. Jackson played with Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor before forming his own Decoding Society band in 1981.


Keyboard player and record producer George Duke was born this day in 1946 in San Rafael, Calif. He has toured with such diverse groups as Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa. He also was a producer on Miles Davis's 1986 album "Tutu."

On the New York jazz scene... Joe Lovano is at Birdland tonight, where the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band performs the late show. The Terence Blanchard Group and singer Raya Yarbrough's band are at the Jazz Standard tonight. Gonzalo Rubalcaba's trio is at Iridium with special guest David Sanchez.

Nicholas Payton and The Soul Patrol and the Danilo Perez trio are at the Blue Note, where the Shunzo Ohno quintet is featured this afternoon in the East Meets West jazz brunch. Trombonist Chris Washburne and his SYOTOS band bring Latin jazz to Smoke on the Upper West Side each Sunday night.


The Danish Radio Big Band is at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge, Mass., tonight and Monday.


In Chicago... guitarist Larry Coryell is at the Jazz Showcase tonight with bassist Larry Gray and drummer Paul Wertico. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles. Bill O'Connell's Chicago Skyliners Big Band is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn. The Kimberly Gordan trio is at the Green Mill for the Sunday Night Late Show. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park tonight. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne. Tim Green and Tim McNamara are at Katerina's this noon.
