Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Jazz drumming legend Max Roach was born this day in New Land, N.C., in 1924. He made his recording debut in 1943 with Coleman Hawkins. Roach became the regular drummer in Charlie Parker's quintet in the late 1940s before forming a trailblazing new band that he co-led with trumpeter Clifford Brown from 1954 until Brown's untimely death in 1956. Max Roach remains a busy senior statesman on the jazz scene.

Tenor saxophonist Allan Eager was born this day in 1927 in New York. He won acclaim as a member of Tadd Dameron's small band in the late 1940s. This important early bop saxophonist stopped full-time performing in 1957, but resumed his career in 1982.


Pianist and bandleader Buddy Johnson was born this day in 1915 in Darlington, S.C. His big band held long-term engagements at New York's Savoy Ballroom in the 1940s.

Guitarist Mike Stern was born this day in 1953 in Boston.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


The 30th annual International Association for Jazz Education continues today at Canada's Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The National Endowment for the Arts will present its annual American Jazz Masters Awards to Jimmy Heath, Elvin Jones and Abbey Lincoln. Tonight's awards concert will feature Nnenna Freelon, Lizz Wright, Metalwood and Slide Hampton and the World of Trombones and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band.


On the New York jazz scene... Mark Murphy is at Birdland through Saturday. The Gonzalo Rubalcaba trio is at Iridium this week with special guest David Sanchez. Nicholas Payton and The Soul Patrol and the Danilo Perez trio are at the Blue Note through Sunday. Donald Harrison's Congo Nation Tribe is at the Jazz Standard through Saturday. The Luis Perdomo trio is at The Jazz Gallery tonight.


Singer Rebecca Parris is at Chan's in Woonsocket, R.I., tonight with her band.


In and around Boston... Roomful of Blues is at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Kendrick Oliver and the New Life Jazz Orchestra are at Scullers jazz club in Boston. The Boston Horns are at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge.

Pianist John Stetch is featured tonight in the Friday Night Jazz series at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Great Stair Hall. Elsewhere in Philadelphia...
