Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Dec. 15.


On this day in 1949, the jazz club named Birdland opened in New York City. It took its name from the nickname of alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, and the man called "Bird" played there opening night. The original Birdland closed in the late 1960s. Its newest version is an upscale jazz club on West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan.


Versatile lead trumpet player Jimmy Nottingham was born this day in 1925 in New York. He died in 1978.


Alto saxophonist and clarinetist Gene Quill was born this day in 1927 in Atlantic City, N.J. He is best known for his 1950's association with Phil Woods. His career was cut short in the 1970s by partial paralysis following brain damage.


Trombonist Curtis Fuller, a former Jazz Messenger and founding member of the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet, was born this day in 1934 in Detroit.


Drummer Dannie Richmond was born this day in 1935 in New York. The longtime Charles Mingus sideman died in 1988.


Bebop pianist Barry Harris was born this day in 1929 in Detroit.

On the New York jazz scene... the Chris Potter quartet is at the Village Vanguard. Oscar Peterson's quartet is at the Blue Note. The Jazz Standard tonight features Pablo Ziegler "Tango Meets Jazz" quintet with special guest Paquito d'Rivera tonight. The Ron Carter quartet is at Iridium. The Mulgrew Miller trio is at The Jazz Gallery tonight. Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke on Sunday nights.


Bobby Floyd, Glen Holmes and Bill Ransom perform tonight at the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society Holiday Party at Vina Note.


Saxophonist Dave Koz brings the sixth annual "Smooth Jazz Christmas Tour" with David Benoit, Rick Braun, Brenda Russell and Peter White to Detroit's Music Hall Center For The Performing Arts tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene... the Chicago Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra with Mike Vax is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn. The Kimberly Gordan trio is at the Green Mill. The Joey DeFrancesco trio is at the Jazz Showcase. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park. Russell Alan Rowe's trio with Nicole Cardi is at Pops for Champagne tonight. Judy Roberts and Jackie Allen, and Two for Brazil are featured in tonight's Holiday Candlelight Concert at Pops of Highwood.


In New Orleans tonight... Hamid Drake, William Parker, Kidd Jordan and Fred Anderson are at the Blue Nile, along with the Improvisational Arts Council. The Hot Club of New Orleans swing band is at the Circle Bar. The Shannon Powell Quartet is at Donna's. Burke Ingraffia is at Dos Jefes. Linnzi Zaorski and Delta Royale and Warren Battiste are at El Matador.

Ryan Burrage and His Rhythmakers are at Fritzel's European Jazz Pub. Big Sam's Funky Nation and Evan Howard are at the Funky Butt. Johnny Vidacovich trio with George Porter Jr. and June Yamagishi and Trombone Shorty are at the Maple Leaf. Lucien Barbarin and the Sunday Night Swingsters are at the Palm Court.

The Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. The Dixie Trio is at the Seaport Cafe. Leigh Harris is at Snug Harbor. Big Al "Santa" Carson and the Riverwalk Jazz Band are at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park this afternoon.


On the California jazz scene... Denny Zeitlin's trio is at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The Golden Eagle Dixieland Jazz Band is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton this afternoon. Pianist Jon Mayer and Friends are at Spazio in Sherman Oaks tonight. The Sunday Jazz Band featuring Carl Saunders on trumpet is at Charlie O's in Valley Glen tonight. Jing Chi featuring Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip and Vinny Colaiuta is at Yoshi's in Oakland.
