Pianist Dave Brubeck was born this day in 1920 in Concord, Calif. A prolific performer and recording artist, Brubeck remains busy on the concert circuit.

Singer Annie Ross was born this day in 1930 in England. She is best known for her work with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, the vocal trio that set rapid-fire lyrics to jazz instrumentals in a style known as called vocalese. Ross and Jon Hendricks began touring together again in 1998.


Tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper was born this day in 1925 in Pittsburgh. He spent six years in the Stan Kenton Orchestra starting in 1945, then became a busy freelance musician on the West Coast, including a stint in Howard Rumsey's All-Stars.


Bass player Jay Leonhart was born this day in 1940 in Baltimore.

Bassist Harvie Swartz was born this day in 1948 in Chelsea, Mass. He's a busy bandleader, producer and sideman, working both in jazz and Latin contexts.

The Ottawa International Jazz Festival will hold its annual fundraiser tonight. One of the many items on the auction block is a seat the festival custom-made for Brad Mehldau for his performance last July 24 at Confederation Park. The Bill Charlap trio will perform.
