Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Nov. 30.


Trumpeter, singer and big band leader Jack Sheldon was born this day in 1931 in Jacksonville, Fla.


On this day in 1940, Charlie Parker made his first recording with the Jay McShann Band. It happened at radio station KFBI in Wichita, Kan. The song was "I've Found a New Baby."


On this night in 2001, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation presented its 8th annual Living Legacy Jazz Award to violinist Joe Kennedy Jr. at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Kennedy was one of the first black American musicians admitted to the Richmond Symphony, where he was resident violinist for nearly 20 years. He has also performed and recorded extensively as a jazz band leader and sideman and has been deeply involved in music education.

There's a Brazilian Thanksgiving Samba Party at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight.
