Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Nov. 23.


Trombonist Tyree Glenn was born in 1912 in Corsicana, Texas. He was a fixture in the Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington bands for many years. He died in 1974.


Composer and arranger Johnny Mandel was born this day in 1925 in New York. Like Tyree Glenn, Mandel played trombone. He also played trumpet. Mandel first came to prominence as an arranger for Woody Herman. His most famous composition, "The Shadow of Your Smile," was written for the 1965 movie "The Sandpiper."


Bass player Ray Drummond, nicknamed "The Bulldog," was born this day in 1946 in Brookline, Mass. His jazz career began on the West Coast after several cycles in which he worked in corporate America as an insurance and food service executive.

The Fred Hersch quintet with Kenny Wheeler, Mark Turner, Ben Street and Nasheet Waits is at the Jazz Standard. Jazz at Lincoln Center presents drummer Terri Lyne Carrington's band for a final night in its Jazz at the Penthouse series.

Brazilian pianist and composer Sergio Mendes is at the Blue Note with Brasil 2002 for the club's Fall Vocal Festival. The third annual Django Reinhardt Festival continues at Birdland, where tonight's special guest is Charles Wizen. The Heath Brothers are at Iridium. Jason Lindner and Dafnis Prieto are featured tonight in The Jazz Gallery's Composers Series with Hans Glawischnig on bass, Peter Apfelbaum on reeds and Avishai E. Cohen on trumpet. Sex Mob performs tonight at Sweet Rhythm, formerly Sweet Basil.


Caetano Veloso is at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Kenny Barron's quintet is at Shanghai Jazz in Madison, N.J., tonight. Dave Samuels is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight. David Chevan and Warren Byrd bring their duo version of the Afro-Semitic Experience to the Havdallah Cafe at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield, N.J., tonight.


On the Boston area jazz scene... Eliane Elias is at Scullers jazz club in Boston tonight. The Donna Byrne quintet with special guest Harry Allen is at The Regattabar in Cambridge. Guitarist Julien Kasper from the Bruce Katz Band is at the Center For the Arts in Natick tonight.


In Philadelphia tonight... Byard Lancaster and Barbara Walker are at the Larose Global Music Room tonight. Conjunto 23 is at Mokas. Cecil Payne is at Ortlieb's Jazzhaus with the Ortlieb's Hausband. Dave Weckl is at Zanzibar Blue. Mary Ellen Desmond and Meg Clifton are at Chris's Jazz Café with the Larry McKenna quartet


Alto saxophonist Frank Morgan and Friends are at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., through Sunday.


Sammy Figueroa's Latin Explosion featuring Carlos Averoff is at Van Dyke's Cafe in Miami's South Beach tonight. The Arthur Barron Afro Blue Band is at Gil's Cafe in Miami Beach for a rare club appearance by the South Florida bandleader.


Singer Nnenna Freelon is at the Stephens Performing Arts Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham tonight.


Avishai Cohen's International Vamp Band is at the Tri-C Eastern Campus in Highland Hills, Ohio, tonight.


Singer Kevin Mahogany is at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight.
