Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Guitarist Barney Kessel was born this day in Muskogee, Okla., in 1923.


Multi-instrumentalist David Amram was born this day in 1930 in Philadelphia. He has had a career-long fascination with mixing folk, classical and Middle Eastern music into his jazz-based performances.


Trombonist George Masso was born this day in 1926 in Cranston, R.I. After a stint with Jimmy Dorsey following World War II, Masso became a music teacher for 18 years. He resumed work in 1974 as a full-time musician, playing with Benny Goodman, Bobby Hackett and the World's Greatest Jazz Band.


Trombonist Wayne Andre was born this day in 1931 in Manchester, Conn.


Trombonist Roswell Rudd was born in 1935 in Sharon, Conn. He remains a creative figure on the free-jazz scene, and is a frequent collaborator these days with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy.

Trombonist Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke tonight, celebrating its two-year anniversary of Sunday night performances at the club. Singer Abbey Lincoln's quartet is at the Blue Note tonight and today's East Meets West Jazz Brunch features Hiromi.


Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight.


In and around Chicago... the Sam Rivers trio is at the Jazz Showcase. Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles. Kimberly Gordan's trio is at the Green Mill tonight for the late show. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. The Paul Hartshaw Ensemble is at the No Exit Cafe for this afternoon's installment of the Jazz at 4 series. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans... the Earl Brown trio is at Cafe Sbisa tonight. The Hot Club of New Orleans swing band is at the Circle Bar. The Shannon Powell quartet is at Donna's tonight. Joe Krown is at Dos Jefes. Linnzi Zaorski and the Night Blooming Jazzmen and Warren Battiste are at El Matador. Matt Lemmler and Paul Longstreth are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Johnny Vidacovich and Trombone Shorty are at the Maple Leaf tonight. Lucien Barbarin is at the Palm Court. The Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. The Dixie Trio is at the Seaport Cafe. Sonny Fortune is at Snug Harbor with the David Torkanowsky trio.


Singer Rene Marie's group is featured in the Sundays at Murry's series in Columbia, Mo., this afternoon and evening.


In California... singer Mark Murphy is at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. Trumpeter Steve Huffsteter is at Charlie O's in Valley Glen tonight. The Golden Eagle Dixieland Jazz Band is at Steamer's Jazz Cafe in Fullerton this afternoon. Trumpeter Carl Saunders and Friends are at Spazio in Sherman Oaks tonight. Marian McPartland is at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight.


Caetano Veloso is at Wilfrid Pelletier Hall in Montreal.
