Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Nov. 8.


Singer Chris Connor was born this day in 1927 in Kansas City. Her professional career began with the Claude Thornhill band, but it was with the Stan Kenton Orchestra that her husky voice and emotional intensity began winning her a loyal army of fans.


Guitarist Russell Malone was born this day in 1963 in Albany, Ga. He's now touring with his own band after several years on the road as a high-profile featured sideman with Diana Krall.


On this night in 2001, Jazz at Lincoln Center began a three-concert celebration of the high-flying, hot cooking music of hard bop trumpeters Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, featuring young trumpeters Dominick Farinacci, Andrea Lindborg, Jeremy Pelt and Mike Rodriguez.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene... Mose Allison's quartet is at Iridium. Saxophonist Greg Osby's band is at the Village Vanguard this week. Week one of the Blue Note's Fall Vocal Festival continues tonight with The Manhattan Transfer's 30th birthday celebration. The Gary Bartz Quintet plus String Quartet are at The Jazz Standard through Sunday. He will premiere a new work, "The Rimsky Korsakov Project -- Jazz Interpretations of Sheherazade" and also perform his piece "The Coltrane Project." Michael Cain's Story Trio is at The Jazz Gallery tonight. Don Byron's "Contrasting Brilliance: The Music of Igor Stravinsky and Raymond Scott" is at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space tonight. The Max Flemming Quartet is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight and Saturday,


The fall edition of the Cape May Jazz Festival opens at New Jersey's quaint southernmost point tonight. This festival is a Dizzy Gillespie tribute. The opening night headliners include Herbie Mann, T.S. Monk, Arturo O'Farrill and Jimmy Bruno.

Saturday's prime acts include the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Alumni Band, featuring Slide Hampton, Paquito D'Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Benny Green, Silvester Lee and John Lee; Buster Williams' "Something More" band featuring Kenny Barron, Benny Golson and Lenny White; the Phil Woods quintet; Bootsie Barnes; Junior Mance; and, William Cepeda's Afro-Rican jazz band.


Pianist Rachel Z is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight and Saturday.


On the Boston area jazz scene... the Pat Martino-Gil Goldstein duo is at The Regattabar in Cambridge through Saturday. Freddy Cole is at Scullers jazz club in Boston tonight and Saturday. Trumpeter Jeff Stout's trio is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight with singer Debby Larkin and guitarist Gray Sargent. The Jim Hobbs Big Band is at the Church of Our Saviour in Brookline tonight as part of the Jazz in the Sanctuary series.


Roy Ayers is at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia tonight and Saturday.


Saxophonist Eric Alexander is at Twins in Washington, D.C., tonight and Saturday with his quartet, featuring pianist Harold Mabern.


The Hollywood, Fla., Jazz Festival presents conch/trombonist Steve Turre's band and Sammy Figueroa's Latin Synergy band featuring Dave Valentin and Ray Vega tonight at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center.


The second annual Collegiate Big Band Invitational gets underway tonight at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich. It runs through Sunday with bands from Bowling Green, Central Michigan University, the University of Michigan, Michigan State, Wayne State and Eastern Michigan.


In and around Chicago... the Chris Lega-Pat Mallinger quintet is at Andy's. Judy Roberts is at the Chicago Firehouse. Bob Baglione's trio is at The Foundry at Fox Valley Mall. Charlie Kolhase quintet is at the Green Mill tonight and Saturday. The Louis Bellson quintet is at the Jazz Showcase. Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Elaine Dame, Jeremy Kahn and Dan DeLorenzo are at Katerina's.

BMR4 is at Michael's Jazz Bistro in Glen Ellyn. The King Fleming trio is at Philander's in Oak Park. Bradley Young's Chet Baker Tribute takes place tonight at Pops for Champagne after an early set by Warren Beck. The Yoko Noge trio is at Pops of Highwood. William Russo's Chicago Jazz Ensemble presents "Sketches of Spain" and his own work, "Jubilatum," tonight at the Maddox Theater at Rockford College.


In New Orleans... Fredy Omar is at the Blue Nile tonight. The Earl Brown trio is at Cafe Sbisa. David Torkanowsky is at Cobalt. Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias are at Donna's. Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. James Rivers is at the Fine Arts Center. Devin Phillips quartet is at the Funky Butt. Topsy Chapman and Louis Ford are at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's casino.

The Joe Krown Organ Combo is at Le Bon Temps Roule. Dirty Dozen Brass Band is at the Maple Leaf tonight. Ernie Elly's Slickshots with Thais Clark are at the Palm Court. Leroy Jones leads the band at Preservation Hall. Brian Coogan is at Rene Bistrot. The Panorama Jazz Band is at the Seaport Cafe. Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor tonight. The Richie Moten trio and the Silverleaf Jazz Band are at the Sonesta's Mystick Den.


Tonight's schedule at the 20th anniversary edition of the San Francisco Jazz Festival features Merle Haggard with a tribute to Bob Wills at Masonic Auditorium, and a flamenco concert at the Herbst Theatre, with Vicente Amigo.

Elsewhere on the California jazz scene... the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles through Sunday. Flora Purim and Airto Moreira are at the Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood this week.

The Bill Watrous quartet is at Steamer's Jazz Cafe in Fullerton. Trumpeter Carl Saunders guests with the John Heard trio tonight and Saturday at Charlie O's in Valley Glen. The Al Viola quartet is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks with the Jon Mayer trio. Mimi Fox brings Rhythm and Improvisation to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz tonight. The Cedar Walton trio with Vincent Herring and Nicholas Payton is at Yoshi's in Oakland this week. Saxophonist Andrew Speight's quartet is at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco with Akira Tana on drums, Matt Clark on piano and Michael Zisman on bass.


The Ingrid Jensen quartet featuring saxophonist Seamus Blake is at The Cellar restaurant and jazz club in Vancouver tonight and Saturday.


The Omar Sosa octet is at Leverkusener Jazztag tonight in Leverkusen, Germany.
