First there was the "Millionaire" quiz show, originally hosted by Regis Philbin, who had his career resurrected by being asked to host the broadcast. Then the wave of reality shows came flooding across the television landscape. Just as in previous years when one show's success spawns a ton of imitators, now there is a new reality show on the horizon. This one combines the best (or worst) of "Survivor" and "American Idol" and might as well be called "Who Wants to be a Supermodel." UPN tells media that Tyra Banks will star in a new series called "Supermodel." The show will give a series of "contestants" the chance to "show their wares" and get a contract to work on the runways of the world. In a release on the new show, Banks is quoted as saying that she wants to take the mystery out of the image of supermodels who, she says, are actually real people. (They just don't happen to look like it.) Advertisement Advertisement JENNIFER BEALS MUCH IN DEMAND Popular actress Jennifer Beals is facing the critics again with her role in the new movie "Roger Dodger." Columnist Liz Smith describes the film as a "moving, coming-of-age-battle-of-the-sexes film." Smith says that there is great on-screen chemistry between Beals and actress Elizabeth Berkley. And there should be. The two have been fast friends for years. As a matter of fact, the two have been such good friends that they often finished each other's sentences. Now Beals is involved in a new project, being filmed in New Orleans. She's mastered a Cajun accent for the role. (Where's Justin Wilson when you need him?) The movie co-stars Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman. It's called "Runaway Jury." By the way, Beals recently commented that she was the only person on Bourbon Street who seemed to be sober. NEW SNAG IN 'DIANA BUTLER' CASE IN LONDON A British court says that the trial of Lady Diana's once-trusted butler was halted Tuesday, for the second time in two weeks. The internationally watched trial sees Paul Burrell, a former assistant and trusted friend of the late "Lady Di" on trial, facing charges that during his time in royal quarters he walked away with more than 300 items that were the personal property of Diana and others in her household. People magazine is reporting that Burrell earlier pleaded innocent to pilfering the items after Diana's death in 1997. No members of the royal family have been called in to testify, but Diana's mother and sister have been put on the stand. The jury's future was effectively put into limbo for an unannounced reason. The judge told the members that they would receive phone calls as to when to report back for more days in court. Advertisement GEORGE JONES BACK 'IN' AT THE CMA AWARDS Several years ago colorful country star George Jones boycotted the annual Country Music Awards. At the time Jones said he would decline an invitation to sing his nominated song of the year, "Choices," because producers did not want him to sing the entire song on the air. Much to the chagrin of show organizers, when singer Alan Jackson finished his scheduled song he unexpectedly sang a snippet of the Jones song. The audience roared. This time around Jones says he will be on hand to participate in the awards; he's nominated for best vocal event award for his collaboration with Garth Brooks in "Beer Run." Jones will take part in the broadcast awards show as one of the presenters. Also sharing the stage in giving out awards will be Jessica Andrews, Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black, Deana Carter and Tammy Cochran. The news provider country.com says that Blake Shelton, Trick Pony and Mark Wills have also signaled their intentions to participate. This year's CMA awards are the 36th annual. They will be broadcast on Nov. 6 on CBS. Advertisement JUDGE JUDY IS BUSY SAVING FACE When you reach the pinnacle of success that Judge Judy has, you have to get used to seeing your face on billboards in major cities. There you are, a thousand times larger than life, splayed out for the inspection of the rabble. As a matter of fact, a new series of billboards graces Los Angeles freeways with not one, not two, but three faces of the judge, displaying a variety of expressions. The first two tout her daily broadcast on one station; the third is to hype her broadcast on another. Through all of this she looks great. Maybe that's why she tells the New York Post that it's not how you feel, it's actually how you look that is the more important. She tells the publication that the best way to get in a blue mood is to start looking lousy ... then everything becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. MONDALE TO TAKE UP WELLSTONE'S CRUSADE There are great feelings of happiness and some feelings of anger in American politics in the wake of the incredible memorial service held in Minnesapolis for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, members of his family and the others who died in last week's plane crash. The service was attended by an estimated 20,000 people -- including most of the Senate, many from the House and former President Bill Clinton and former Vice President Al Gore. Former Vice President Walter Mondale attended, was given a roaring welcome, but did not speak. He waited until Wednesday to tell state party officials that he would accept the challenge to enter his state's senatorial campaign, taking Wellstone's place on the ballot. Amid all the euphoria, though, has come a backlash from the GOP side of the aisle. Some, according to CNN, feel that the tribute turned into a media event to hype the Democratic Party's bid for the important Senate seat. Some have been asking for equal time on the stations and networks that carried the Wellstone tribute. Meanwhile, Mondale has his work cut out for him. But, being no stranger to politics, he will no doubt stump nonstop from now until next Tuesday.
