Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Oct. 26.


Mahalia Jackson was born this day in New Orleans in 1911. This devoutly religious woman rose from cleaning lady and neighborhood church singer to the heights of artistic and financial success. Without peer as a gospel singer, Jackson made church music familiar to the world at-large. Her 1945 recording "Move On Up A Little Higher" sold more than 1 million copies.


Saxophonist and bandleader Charlie Barnet was born this day in 1913 in New York. His big band caused a sensation in 1939 when it succeeded the Count Basie orchestra at the Famous Door in New York. His biggest hit was a definitive version of "Cherokee." Barnet died in 1991.


Saxophonist Warne Marsh was born this day in 1927 in Los Angeles. His primary musical associations were with Lennie Tristano and Lee Konitz. He died in 1987.


On this night in 2001, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove brought their Directions in Music tour to Orchestra Hall in Chicago.

On the New York jazz scene... the Kenny Barron sextet is at the Village Vanguard tonight. Kenny Rankin is at Birdland. The Chick Corea Elektric Band is at the Blue Note tonight and Sunday. The Dee Dee Bridgewater big band is at Iridium through Sunday. Larry Goldings' trio with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart is at the Jazz Standard.

The Jazz Gallery presents trumpeter Roy Hargrove's debut of his Hammond B3 organ quartet tonight, featuring organist Raymond Angry, drummer Winard Harper and guitarist Saul Rubin. Trumpeter Duane Eubanks performs every Saturday night from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. in the club's After Hours series. The James Carney trio is at Triad tonight. Jimmy McGriff is at Sweet Rhythm.

Bassist Alex Blake's Quartet is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight. Paul Bollenback and Ron Affif perform today in the Arkadia Music Center's Guitar Days series. Jazz at Lincoln Center's new Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, led by Arturo O'Farrill, is at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts tonight. Singer Michael Camacho is at Shelly's tonight.

The Herbie Hancock quartet is at the State Theater in Ithaca tonight.


Drummer Joe Morello's quartet is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight.


The North Star Jazz Ensemble is at CAV in Providence, R.I., tonight.


In and around Boston... Oleta Adams is at Scullers in Boston tonight. The Patrice Williamson group with special guest Stan Strickland is at The Regattabar in Cambridge celebrating the release of the singer's newest CD, "Free to Dream." The Bruce Katz band is at the Acton Jazz Café in Acton, Mass., tonight.

The Highland Jazz series at Christ Episcopal Church in Needham tonight features saxophonist Fred Haas's quartet in a Bossa Nova High tribute to Charlie Byrd, Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. The Indigo Invention Group, led by saxophonist Hans Spencer, is at the Center for the Arts in Natick tonight. The Greg Hopkins quintet is at Zara in Worcester tonight.


Composer and pianist Miguel Romero will be bringing Cuban Jazz to the Marketplace on the Village Green in Smyrna, Ga., tonight.


Henry Butler is at Municipal Auditorium in Fort Smith, Ark., tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene... the Asian American Jazz 2002 series features Yoshihide Otomo's New Jazz Quartet and Ensemble Noamnesia tonight at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Judy Roberts is at The Chicago Firehouse. The Dave Liebman Quartet is at the Green Mill tonight. The Mose Allison trio is at the Jazz Showcase for two more nights. Havana is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. The Zach Brock quintet with Rob Scheps is at Katerina's tonight. Rankinfyle is at Philander's in Oak Park. Henry Johnson's Organ Express is at Pops for Champagne.


On the New Orleans jazz scene... the Blue Universe Quartet is at the Blue Nile. Samirah Evans and her trio are at the Bombay Club. The Earl Brown trio is at Cafe Sbisa. Bob Sunda and Joe Krown are at Charley G's Seafood Grill. Willie Tee's trio is at Cobalt. New Orleans Streetbeat is at the Crescent City Brewhouse.

Leroy Jones quintet is at Donna's. Matt Lemmler and Don Vappie are at Dos Jefes. Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. Devin Phillips' quartet is at the Funky Butt. Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Mid-City Lanes Rock-n-Bowl. Topsy Chapman is at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's casino. Lionel Ferbos leads the Palm Court Jazz Band tonight at the Palm Court. Riccardo Crespo is at the Pirate's Alley Cafe.

Brian Coogan is at the Rene Bistrot. The Panorama Jazz Band is at the Seaport Cafe. Brasilliance with Jovino Neto is at Snug Harbor. The New Orleans Jazz Vipers and Saudade are at the Spotted Cat. George French is at the Windsor Court. Jovino Santos Neto is at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park this afternoon with Ray Moore, James Singleton and Wayne Maureau.


The Lake Ozark, Mo., Dixieland Jazz Festival is underway through Sunday. This year's lineup includes the New Red Onion Jazz Babies, Lynn Zimmer and the Racquet Club Jazz Band, the Beale Street Jazz Band and Igor's Jazz Cowboys.


Tonight's schedule at the 20th anniversary edition of the San Francisco Jazz Festival features the Wayne Shorter and Branford Marsalis quartets at Masonic Auditorium. At the Regency Center, there's a Blues in the Ballroom concert with James "Blood" Ulmer & Vernon Reid's "Memphis Blood: The Sun Sessions" project and Johnny A., plus an 11th Hour Jam Party with the Yohimbe Brothers featuring Vernon Reid and DJ Logic.


Elsewhere on the California jazz scene... tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles with his quartet, featuring pianist Harold Mabern. The Wallace Roney quintet with Gary Bartz, Patrice Rushen, Lenny White and Bob Hurst is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood. Singer Jane Monheit is at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert tonight.

Gordon Brisker is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks with the Bill Cunliffe trio. Saxophonist Ralph Moore is featured with John Heard's trio tonight at Charlie O's in Valley Glen. Rebecca Parris is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight and Sunday. Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band is at the Spaghettini Italian Grill in Seal Beach tonight.

The Bill Charlap trio is at the Jazz and Blues in Carmel tonight. Hiroshima is at Yoshi's in Oakland through Sunday. Seattle-based vocalist Woody Woodhouse and the Glen Pearson trio are at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco tonight. Singer Tierney Sutton is at Toad Hall Winery in Napa.


The Omar Sosa octet is at France's Festival de Rive de Giers tonight.
