Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Saxophonist Jimmy Heath was born this day in Philadelphia in 1926. He's a member of one of the first families of jazz, brother to bassist Percy Heath of Modern Jazz Quartet fame and to drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath.


Bass player Chubby Jackson was born in 1918. He was a mainstay in Woody Herman's First Herd in the early 1940s and worked with the band into the 1950s. His compositions included "Northwest Passage." He's the father of big band drummer Duffy Jackson.


New Orleans guitarist Edmond Souchon was born this day in 1897. His Six and Seven-Eighths Band, a nine-member string band that was started in 1911, was revived in 1945 and continued until the 1960s. He died in 1968.

On the New York jazz scene... Kenny Rankin is at Birdland tonight and Saturday. The Kenny Barron sextet is at the Village Vanguard tonight. Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars with Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker. James Moody, Slide Hampton, Benny Green, John Lee, Jackie McLean and Dennis Mackrel are at the Blue Note tonight.

The Dee Dee Bridgewater big band is at Iridium through Sunday. Larry Goldings' trio with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart is at the Jazz Standard. The Robert Glasper trio is at the Jazz Gallery tonight. Kendra Shank is at the Fifty-Five Bar tonight with guitarist John Hart and bassist Dean Johnson. Jazz at Lincoln Center's new Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, led by Arturo O'Farrill, opens its 2002-03 season at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture in the Bronx tonight.


Pianist Rick DellaRatta is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight.


Stacy Phillips and members of David Chevan's band, the Afro-Semitic Experience, are at the Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., tonight.


On the Boston area jazz scene... the Herbie Hancock quartet with Gary Thomas, Scott Colley and Terri Lyne Carrington is at the Berklee Performance Center tonight. Oleta Adams is at Scullers in Boston tonight and Saturday. The Jose Desantos-Val Ramos-Jose Ramos flamenco trio is at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers are at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge tonight.


The Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra is at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass., tonight.


Karrin Allyson is at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia tonight and Saturday.


The Terrace Theater bat Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, will host the Regina Carter quintet tonight.


Detroit vocalist Shahida Nurullah appears with the Ron Brooks trio tonight at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts and the LaFontsee Galleries bring percussionist and composer John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet to the LaFontsee Galleries in Grand Rapids tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene... the Asian American Jazz 2002 series features Jon Jang and David Murray, Joseph Jarman, Robbie Hunsinger and Tatsu Aoki tonight at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Chris Lega-Pat Mallinger quintet is at Andy's tonight. Judy Roberts is at The Chicago Firehouse.

The Dave Liebman Quartet is at the Green Mill tonight and Saturday. The Mose Allison trio is at the Jazz Showcase this week. Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. The Mike Allemana quintet with Bob Dogan is at Katerina's tonight. The Steve Million trio is at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston. The King Fleming trio is at Philander's in Oak Park. Yoko Noge and Henry Johnson's Organ Express are at Pops for Champagne.

Cuban singer-songwriter Juan-Carlos Formell is at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz tonight. Seattle-based vocalist Woody Woodhouse and the Glen Pearson trio are at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco tonight. Hiroshima is at Yoshi's in Oakland through Sunday.


Bobby Previte's Bump band and Michael Occhipinti's Creation Dream are at the Capilano College Performing Arts Theater in North Vancouver, British Columbia, tonight.
