Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Drummer Tubby Hall was born in Sellers, La., this day in 1895. He played with a number of early jazz bands in New Orleans before moving to Chicago in 1920 to join a band led by the legendary cornet player King Oliver. Hall recorded several times in the 1920s and 1930s as a sideman with Louis Armstrong. He died in Chicago in 1946.

Trombonist Jimmy Archey was born this day in 1902 in Norfolk, Va. He made his first notable recordings in the James P. Johnson Orchestra with Fats Waller and King Oliver, and played in a succession of the finest big bands. He died in 1967.


On this day in 1939, Mary Lou Williams recorded her solo piano solo version of "Little Joe from Chicago" for the Columbia label.

Jazz at Lincoln Center's Jazz at the Penthouse series presents "Caribbean Classics -- Pan Drums" tonight featuring an ensemble led by David "Happy" Williams, with Othello Molineaux on pan drums. It's at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse.

Joshua Redman's new Elastic Band and Chick Corea's Elektric Band are at the Music Hall in Tarrytown tonight. Kenny Rankin is at the Inter-Media Art Center in Huntington, Long Island.
