Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Sept. 11.


Bass player Peck Morrison was born this day in 1919 in Lancaster, Pa. He recorded with King Pleasure, Zoot Sims, Gerry Mulligan, Eddie Jefferson and the J.J. Johnson-Kai Winding Quintet. Morrison was one of the musicians who performed and recorded at the Newport Rebels Festival in 1960. He died in 1988.


Pianist Lorraine Geller was born this day in 1928 in Portland, Ore. Known for her delicate, melodic phrasing, she worked with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm for two years starting in 1949. She married saxophonist Herb Geller in 1951 and moved to Los Angeles where she was a busy participant in the West Coast jazz scene. She died in 1958.


Pianist Oliver Jones was born this day in 1934 in Montreal. His musical development included 12 years of private studies with Oscar Peterson's sister, Daisy Peterson Sweeney. Jones moved full-time into jazz in 1980. He retired from active performance in 1999, but has more than a dozen recordings in print on the Justin Time label.

The Wycliffe Gordon-Eric Reed quartet is at the Jazz Standard. Jane Jarvis celebrates her new release tonight at Cobi's Place with Benny Powell and Earl May in her band.


Trombonist Roswell Rudd is at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass., tonight with the Charlie Kohlhase quintet.


In Chicago... the Henry Johnson quartet is at Andy's. Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui. The Bill Porter Orchestra with Rich Fudoli is at Green Dolphin Street. The Kurt Elling quartet is at the Green Mill tonight. The Kenny Garrett quartet is at the Jazz Showcase. Ken Saydak is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. Jackie Allen and Judy Roberts are at Philander's in Oak Park. The Steve Evans quartet is at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans... Mafouz brings Turkish jazz to the Blue Nile. Manabu Sakei is at Checkpoint Charlie. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at El Matador. The Albert-Ankrum Project is at the Funky Butt. Topsy Chapman is at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's casino. Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Le Bon Temps Roule. David Torkanowsky and Matt Lemmler are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. The Stanton Moore trio featuring James Singleton and Tim Green is at the Maple Leaf. Derek Douget is at Snug Harbor. Dr. Guitar and the Franklin Avenue Overpass and Otra are at the Spotted Cat.


On the California jazz scene... Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. The Alan Ferber sextet is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton. James Moody's quartet is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight. Michael Smolens' septet Kriya is at Yoshi's in Oakland. New York drummer Mike Clark's trio with Theo Saunders on piano and John Wiitala on bass is at Jazz at Pearl's tonight in San Francisco.
