Alto saxophonist Ernie Henry was born this day in 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y. His brief career included work with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and Tadd Dameron. He died in 1957.
Drummer Mickey Roker was born this day in 1932 in Miami. He grew up in Philadelphia where he worked with Jimmy Heath and jammed with Lee Morgan, Reggie Workman, Kenny Barron and McCoy Tyner. His first New York gig and recording opportunity were with Gigi Gryce.
On this day in 1940, there were two recording sessions of note. Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five band recorded "Summit Ridge Drive" for the Victor label in Hollywood and Gene Krupa recorded "Rhumboogie" for the Okeh label.

On the recording front...
Guitarist Scott Henderson is out today with a new compact disc called "Well To The Bone" on the Blues Bureau International label. Singers Thelma Houston and Wade Durham are special guests on his third outing as a leader apart from Tribal Tech, the band that Henderson co-founded with bassist Gary Willis in the mid-'80s. "Well To The Bone" pays homage to the blues rock of the 60s and 70s while mixing in the guitarist's natural jazz leanings. Houston previously appeared on Henderson's 1997 outing, "Tore Down House."
