Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Bandleader Bob Crosby, Bobcats founder and brother of singer-actor Bing Crosby, was born this day in 1913 in Spokane, Wash.

Pianist and film composer Martial Solal was born this day in 1927 in Algiers. He settled in Paris in 1950 where he played and recorded with Django Reinhardt, Don Byas, Kenny Clarke, Lucky Thompson and Sidney Bechet.


Alto saxophonist Bobby Watson was born this day in 1953 in Lawrence, Kan. He served as musical director of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1977 to 1981.


This was the day, in 1939, when the Glenn Miller Orchestra completed an astonishing 14-week summer run at New York's Glen Island Casino. Nightly radio broadcasts from the dance hall created a phenomenal following for the band.

On this day in 1972 tenor saxophonist Don Byas died of lung cancer in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was 59. Byas settled in Europe in 1946 and was the first great American jazz superstar to move there after Coleman Hawkins' five-year stay in the 1930s.

The Ron Carter sextet with Benny Golsen and the Lonnie Plaxico group are at the Blue Note. The McCoy Tyner trio with George Mraz and Al Foster is at Iridium. Richard Bona is at the Jazz Standard. Jimmy Cobb's Mob is at Smoke. Jason Lindner is at the Jazz Gallery tonight. Oscar Feldman is at the Cornelia Street Cafe. Myron Walden is at Kavehaz. Singer Kendra Shank is at the Fifty-Five Bar. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is at B.B. King's Blues Club tonight. The Danny Mixon trio is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight and Saturday. David (Fathead) Newman's band is at the Belleayre Music Festival upstate in Highmount.

In the Boston area... there's a tribute to the late bassist Ray Brown at Scullers jazz club in Boston featuring Marlena Shaw with Richard Evans on bass, David Hazeltine on piano and Ron Savage on drums. The Kenny Barron-Stefon Harris duo is at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight The Matthias Lupri Group with saxophonist Felipe Salles is at the Acton Jazz Cafe tonight.

In western Massachusetts, the Jazz Forum All-Stars open the 2nd annual Berkshire Jazz Festival with a free concert tonight at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge.


In Cleveland, Ira Sullivan and Dominick Farinacci are at Nighttown tonight. Saxophonist Ernie Krivda brings his Swingtown Sextet to the Cleveland Museum of Art tonight. Boney James is at the Nautica Pavilion.


The Larry Nozero quintet plays the music of Eddie Russ tonight at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich.
