Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

By KEN FRANCKLING, United Press International   |   Aug. 17, 2002 at 2:00 AM   |   Comments

Today is Aug. 17.

Tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec was born this day in 1918 in Newark, N.J. This Blue Note recording artist worked extensively through the 1940s with Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge and the Cab Calloway bands. He spent much of the 1950s with another sort of cab -- driving one. Quebec died in 1963, four years after making a musical comeback that included recordings and work as Blue Note's assistant musical producer.

Pianist Derek Smith was born this day in 1931 in London. He moved to the United States in 1957, led a trio with Connie Kay and Percy Heath, and performed with Benny Goodman.

Bass player George Duvivier was born this day in 1920 in New York. He recorded with Bud Powell, Eric Dolphy, Benny Goodman, Chico Hamilton, Hank Jones and Betty Carter. He died in 1985.

Pianist Duke Pearson was born this day in 1932 in Atlanta. He got his nickname from an uncle who admired Duke Ellington's music. Trumpeter Donald Byrd first recorded Pearson's best known compositions, "Jeannine" and "Cristo Redentor," when Duke was in his group. Pearson died in 1980.

On this day in 1956, drummer Shelly Manne, pianist Andre Previn and bassist Leroy Vinnegar recorded the first jazz version of "My Fair Lady." That session on the Contemporary label was the first in a series of jazz interpretations of material from Broadway musicals.
