By KEN FRANCKLING, United Press International   |   Aug. 3, 2002 at 2:00 AM   |   Comments

Today is Aug. 3.

Singer Eddie Jefferson was born this day in 1918 in Pittsburgh. He was the pioneer of vocalese, the artful practice of creating lyrics to fit recorded instrumental solos on classic jazz tunes. Jefferson died in May 1979 after he was shot in front of a Detroit nightclub where he was performing.

Trumpeter Charlie Shavers was born this day in 1917 in New York. He was the heart and soul of the John Kirby band from 1938 to 1944 before moving to the Tommy Dorsey band for about 11 years.

On this day in 1944, Charlie Barnet recorded "Skyliner" for the Decca label.

On this day in 2001, the city of New Orleans opened a three-day celebration of Louis Armstrong's centennial. The birthplace of jazz also was the birthplace of the man who had a more profound impact on jazz than any other single individual. The weekend included a centennial conference, a Satchmo-inspired music festival, seminars and musical demonstrations, children's activities, a pub-crawl, a jazz mass and a New Orleans second-line parade.
