Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

By KEN FRANCKLING, United Press International   |   July 13, 2002 at 2:00 AM   |   Comments

Today is July 13th.

Tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler was born this day in 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio. He played within the jazz format but rejected most of the prevailing conventions of the bebop and avant- styles for what has best been described as uncompromising abstractions.

Albert Ayler died under mysterious circumstances. Twenty days after he was last seen, his body was found floating in New York's East River in November 1970.

West Coast bass player Leroy Vinnegar was born this day in 1928 in Indianapolis.

On this day in 1939, Frank Sinatra cut his first recording with the Harry James Orchestra for the Brunswick label. The tune was "From the Bottom of My Heart."

Johnny Hartman, one of the great baritones in the history of jazz singing, was born this day in 1923 in Chicago. His best known recording was a 1963 ballad album with John Coltrane. Hartman died in 1983.
