Singer and actress Della Reese, better known for her career-reviving role as an angel on television than her jazz singing, was born this day in 1932.


On this day in 1971, the jazz world, the music world and the world at large mourned the passing of Louis Armstrong. This summer, the world is celebrating the centennial of his birth, long regarded as July 4, 1900 but actually Aug. 4, 1901.


Scott LaFaro, brilliant young bassist with the Bill Evans trio, died on this date in 1961 in an auto accident. He was 25.


On this day in 1928, Johnny Dodds' Washboard Band recorded "The Blue Washboard Stomp."


This was also the day, in 1937, when the Benny Goodman band first recorded "Sing Sing Sing" for the Victor label in Hollywood.

On this day in 1961, in a studio in New York City, the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands recorded together for the first time.


On this day in 2001, there was a memorial service at St. Peter's Church in midtown Manhattan for Afro-Cuban jazz bandleader Chico O'Farrill, the Duke Ellington of Latin jazz, who died the week earlier at age 79.

The Montreal International Jazz Festival winds down its 2002 edition's indoor concerts tonight with Dave Brubeck, Jim Hall, Toots Thielemans and Angele Dubeau, Jacky Terrasson, blues guitarist Steve Hill, Rene Lussier, Jon Hassell, the Francois Theberge Medium Band, John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey, J.J. Cale, Marc Ribot and Norah Jones. Chucho Valdes concludes his four-night segment of the festival's Invitation series with his old band, Irakere.


On the New York jazz scene... the Count Basie Orchestra is at the Blue Note through Sunday with Grover Mitchell at the helm. Guitarist Mark Whitfield's organ trio is at Iridium this week. The Gary Bartz quintet with pianist Barney McCall, guitarist Paul Bollenback, bassist James King and drummer Greg Bandy is at the Village Vanguard this week.

The Jazz Standard presents a "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" Birthday Tribute to Louis Armstrong and the U.S.A through Sunday. Tonight's lineup features trumpeter Brian Lynch's band through Sunday. Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing series presents the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis tonight.

The Knitting lineup features Shiner, Engine Down, Aereogramme, Phade, The Swaggerts, 3 Finger Demon and The Deacons. The Afro-Rican Ensemble will perform this evening at the Brooklyn Museum of Art with Héctor Martignon on piano. The Neville Brothers are at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay as part of the Long Island Summer Festival.


The Boston Horns featuring Henley Douglas Jr. and Garrett Savluk are at Chan's in Woonsocket, R.I., tonight.


Saxophonist Herman Johnson's band is at Ryles in Cambridge, Mass., tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene... Eric Alexander's band is at the Jazz Showcase for two more nights. Bopology is at Joe's

BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium on the Navy Pier tonight. Rankinfyle is at Philander's in Oak Park tonight.


In New Orleans tonight... the Willie Metcalf quintet is at Donna's tonight. Wendell Brunious is at Dos Jefes. Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. Brian O'Neill and Louis Ford are at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's casino. Joe Schlesinger plays piano this evening at Le Meridien. The Tony Dagradi trio is at Le Salon at Windsor Court. John Brunious leads the band at Preservation Hall tonight. The Panorama Jazz Band is at the Seaport Cafe tonight. The Ellis Marsalis trio is at Snug Harbor Frederic Yonnet and Michael Ward are at Sweet Lorraine. The ReBirth Brass Band is at Tipitina's. The Funky 7 Brass Band is at the French Market Complex this afternoon.
